Publish Posts in Your WordPress Website the Correct SEO Way

by mitz on March 11, 2010

I actually teach people how to make WordPress websites, add content to them, and get found by the Search Engines. The biggest problem I have found is that they forget to fill in all the details when attempting to publish a post. Some beginners have been know to even forget to put a title to the post. This is a bit extreme but it has really happened!

What you will need to publish posts in your WordPress Website the correct SEO way:

  • You need a WordPress website. Ha ha, we all know that!
  • You will need the free plugin “The all in one SEO pack”. Please see top SEO plugins.

I have developed a quick checklist that you should get familiar with when posting content to your WordPress website.

  1. Write a descriptive title to your post. Try and think what people would type into the search engines for this subject. What words would be the most common. Make sure your title has at least 5 – 10 words in it..Anymore is overkill. The title is going to catch the fish so make it great! Include your keyword. Here is a great way to find keywords to use in the title.
  2. Fill in the body of your post. Make sure each post is over 500 words, more if possible. Visitors do not like to go to a web page with two sentences of information on it. They will leave in a second. I have my own web content strategy that helps me write top content for my websites. You should also add subtitles with your keywords throughout the post, at least one bulleted list, and some bolded keywords. Google loves good information and you will be rewarded for it. Here are a 10 Onpage SEO tips you should know.
  3. Fill in your tags. These are basically keywords that apply to your post and title. They are not about the website. It’s all about what’s in the post. This is how you let people know what it is about.
  4. Choose a category. Do not publish posts in the uncategorized section. If you do then this will show up in your category list. You should try to choose a category that relates to the post. So therefore if the person clicks on the category, they know there will be posts related to that. You WordPress website categories should be set up when building your website and you should be using (LSI) related keywords. Here is an article on how to setup WordPress categories.
  5. Fill in your SEO details. You might have All in one SEO pack or you might have a theme that includes this option like I have with Thesis. Also the free plugin from Yoast, WP SEO is great for keeping you on track.

A lot of beginners pay huge sums of money to SEO consults, when all they need to do are those few simple steps. By just using descriptive and keyword filled titles to their post, they can start to direct a lot of search traffic to their site. Having an article or post that encourages blog commenting is also a great way to improve rankings as well.

One way of getting search engines to get to your older content a bit easier, thus increasing your WordPress SEO capabilites a LOT, is by using a related posts plugin. These plugins search through your posts database to find posts with the same subject, and add links to these posts.

Keyword research is so very important when posting content. I have my own method that works pretty good and is similar to your checklist. I still use thed Adwords keyword tool to do my basic research, but I also look carefully at the sites that are ranking for those keywords as well.

Hi Mitz,
Really love the information you offer here. Just another question about SEO plugin.

I use another SEO plugin and was wondering if you heard of it or tried it.

The plugin is called Wordpress SEO by Yoast. This plugin also seems to do allot more for you site, like handling the sitmap etc.

Hi there Tony
I use:
All in SEO pack
Google xml sitemaps
SEOpressor

I am very happy with this combination so I have not felt the need to try others. My websites are always a success so I stick to the same thing through and through…

Yoast sounds great..What else does it do ?

This is so frustrating. The way you describe it Mitz, WP is very amazing. If only I could turn back time, if only I read your post first before I started my website. I opt to choose WP instead. This was very helpful. I’ll tell it to my friends though. Will keep on coming back!

Hi jennifer
Have you gone to settings – all in one seo- to enable the plugin. If you have done this then have you tried disabling the plugin and enabling it again. Also you can delete it….and install it again…

It is also good thing to have some SEO plugins installed, e.g. All in one SEO. That will help a lot! Also, if you are adding pictures, the name of the picture should be relevant.

And WP kicks butt!!!! I moved a huge website to it recently and everything went up….Income, traffic, everything… Wordpress websites are the go… Not just blogs now!

Go to the settings tab on the sidebar in your Wordpress dashboard. Find the All in one SEO plugin. Go through the settings and fill in the title, description, and keywords for your blog…tick the box that says enable and then scroll to the bottom to save it.
