Generating traffic from social bookmarking sites is a great way to get targeted hits to your website. Sites such as Reddit, StumbleUpon and Digg can drive lots of traffic to your site. We have written about all sorts of website traffic tips but not mentioned generating traffic from social bookmarking sites. This is a valid form of traffic generation but people seem to always go overboard and do too much of it.
The following are some suggestions for generating traffic from social bookmarking sites.
1. Consider your headlines
A great article with a poor headline is likely to be ignored on social bookmarking sites, much like on your blog itself. The headline is what users see first before reading the article. Take time to think of a catchy headline.

Modified Headline: How to Make a Six-Figure Income Blogging
2. Write a brief and meaningful description
A great headline can grab the attention of users. However, to retain that attention, it is important to create a meaningful description. Make sure the description is a bit controversial since this will attract more attention. But avoid using false facts and lies to create interest.
Though you may be tempted to write a lengthy description of your article, you need to remember that many users won’t have the time to read long pieces. In addition, descriptions are limited in most social bookmarking sites. Therefore, you will need to figure out how you can craft a description that is as short as possible.
3. Write a great first paragraph
This is very important rule for successful social bookmarking. Once you have created a great headline and description, you need to make sure that your first paragraph matches up to that standard.
4. Write great content for social bookmarking
If you are going to draw and maintain your users’ attention, you must ensure that your entire content is excellent. If your articles are poor, then there is no point in bookmarking them. Furthermore, if you continuously post junk, social bookmarking sites might ban your site. Quality content puts you in a win win situation.
5. Allow others to bookmark/vote your website
Instead of bookmarking your own site to death and attracting attention, let other people do it. Make it as easy as possible for them to do this. At the end of your posts, you could insert a social bookmarking button. If your content is great, users are likely to post the article.
6. Submit at the right time
If you want to reach the front page of social bookmarking sites, the time of submission is very important. Most of these sites give you only 24 hours to stay on the front page. Therefore, if you post at a time when most of your users are in bed, you will be wasting your time.
7. Submit to the correct category
Your social bookmarking efforts might fail because a site does not have a suitable category for you. At other times, it may be because of failure to submit to the proper category. When you post in the wrong category, you will have little chance of getting noticed.
8. Interact with other social bookmarkers
Operating alone on sites such as Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon is suicidal. Many stories reach the front page due to a strong backing from your network of friends. Votes from your supporters and friends can help you reach the top page.
9. Submit in English
Most users of social bookmarking sites are from English-speaking nations. Therefore, it is not advisable to make submissions in other languages. If you have to submit a story in another language, you should include an English translation.
10. Don’t submit old news
If you want to become a respected user, never submit old news. If you submit anything old, it should be how-tos and articles that are still relevant.
11. Confirm your facts
If you don’t get your facts right, you will get sarcastic comments from readers as well as negative votes for the story. To avoid this, make sure you double-check your facts. Also You should probably only write about what you know.
When it comes to generating traffic from social bookmarking sites, it can work tremendously for most websites if done correctly.

I am trying. I try to post new stuff, old stuff that is relevant. It does bring traffic and then I do post those blogs on those social networking sites. I think people learn these things just by researching, just as I have done. I have learned a few SEO tricks, learned alot about blogging, but I take the time to read up on it.
Social media has helped my website a lot to gain more traffic. I also once read the search results are now socially transformed. Meaning our social media signals affects the rankings too.

Making Bookmarks in english for a non-english site? all the user will quit in the first second on the first site. this destroys your statistics! i think this is not a good idear.

And what about SEO? I mean, should I always keep my main keywords in mind while posting on Social Media and Social Bookmarking sites or it doesn’t affect website ranking anymore? As far as I’m concerned, I use to write new text every time I post in one of these sites and I always add a keyword or two in the headline and in the paragraph. Do I waste my time?

I’ve never received great traffic from social bookmarking websites like Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit. So I just left my links there for backlinks. There is this social bookmarking website that delivered me 100 daily visits. But it was closed now and I don’t know the reason. Now my traffic went down.
